Nutrition Services features food from India for third Spotlight on Cuisine

Students at Maple Grove, Osseo and Park Center senior high schools had the opportunity to try out a new meal during lunch on April 9 as a part of Nutrition Services’ third Spotlight on Cuisine. This month’s Spotlight on Cuisine featured food from India.

The Spotlight on Cuisine gave students the opportunity to try butter chicken with traditional white rice. Poster boards included in the cafeteria provided students with information on where butter chicken originated and how it is made, including which spices are often included. The butter chicken and white rice was served with a side of Naan bread, a leavened, oven-baked flatbread traditionally baked in a tandoor.

The goal of the Spotlight on Cuisine is to educate students on different cultures through cuisine three to four times a school year with fun and exciting menu items. During the first Spotlight on Cuisine in October, high school students had the opportunity to try pupusas and curtido from Central America. In January, students tried sambusas and Bariis style rice from Somalia.

For some students, these spotlighted meals from around the world are an opportunity to try a new food they have never had before. For other students, the spotlights provide their fellow classmates the opportunity to try a food that is a staple in their home.
