Coming next school year: 279 Online, a 100% remote learning school

Coming next school year: 279 Online, a 100% remote learning school

At the end of this school year, the Distance Learning Academy (which was created specifically to meet pandemic-related requirements) will close and will be followed next year by 279 Online, a new full-time online comprehensive K-12 school. 279 Online will be an ongoing school choice option for students in our district who prefer 100% remote learning. In terms of instruction, there will be many similarities to the DLA, but there will also be some differences.

Similar to DLA

  • 100% remote learning
  • Combination of live instruction and independent work
  • Curriculum that meets state standards and graduation requirements
  • Highly qualified staff dedicated specifically to the online school who will build caring relationships with students and create peer-to-peer connections among them
  • Secondary students will have opportunities to participate in Minnesota State High School League-sponsored activities at one of our high schools

Different in 279 Online

  • 279 Online will be a regular stand-alone school choice option. Students will apply to transfer or open enroll into 279 Online.
  • Students will not be dual-enrolled at their previous school; they will be enrolled only in 279 Online. If your student is currently enrolled in a magnet school, you will give up your magnet school seat when you enroll in 279 Online.
  • Enrollment will be limited to about 2,000 students; a lottery will be used if there are more applications than spaces available. Mid-year transfers will be accepted on a space-available basis.
  • Secondary students will see course options before applying and will register for classes after enrolling in 279 Online.

Who needs to apply?

Any student, including those currently enrolled in DLA, who wishes to enroll in 279 Online must apply. One application is required for each student.

What are the application approval guidelines?

Applications to 279 Online will be approved in order of priority on a space-available basis. A lottery (random selection) will be used if the number of applications received by Jan. 15 exceeds the number of spaces available. Since the school will be in its first year of operation in 2021-2022, the only selection preference priority that will apply for this round of applications is if the parent/legal guardian is an employee of Osseo Area Schools. Note: Preference priority does not guarantee that the student will be accepted to the school.

How to apply

To receive priority consideration for 279 Online for 2021-2022, apply online by Jan. 15, 2021.

Families will be notified of acceptance into the school by Jan. 22, 2021 and will have until Feb. 5, 2021 to complete the enrollment process.
