Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Students at Maple Grove Senior High School (MGSH) are ready for the upcoming production of Newsies. The musical tells the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right.
Students have been working hard for months putting the performance together. Senior Connor Cassidy plays the role of Jack Kelly. Senior Emma Lowe plays the sympathetic journalist Katherine Plummer. They are joined on stage by junior Trey Schaefgen as Davey, junior Bella Lewis as Les and junior Camryn Findley as Crutchie.
“I am so interested in bringing a new spin in art, something creative and inspiring because that is the reason we come to the theater,” said Bri Graham, director of the musical. “I wanted this production of Newsies to be something that was inspiring to what our students are feeling in the world right now.”
The MGSH production of Newsies is filled with expressive choreography that conquers the stage and lets the audience feel the emotions of the characters. In addition to the full cast of talented singers and dancers on stage, the musical is made possible by a live pit orchestra directed by Beth Hellstedt.
Shows will take place on Nov. 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. in the MGSH auditorium. Tickets can be purchased on the Maple Grove Musical Theatre website.
